I feel like I say this a lot, but as always, two things can be true at once:

1. The sitting President of the United States should not be using such outlandish, charged, and dangerous rhetoric.  While I'm not surprised this one chose to do so, that doesn't give him a free pass. It's wrong.  There.  That was easy.
2. Democrats are increasingly playing a game of inching up to the line, but not quite stepping over it.  In this case, a bunchy of Democratic politicians participated in an ad to tell military members that they have a duty to disobey "illegal orders".  Great.  Is there any particular reason that came up right now?  What orders are you talking about specifically?  Are there any other sections of the Uniform Code of Military Justice you'd like to go over?  This tactic is used b/c the politicians involved give themselves room to backpedal if called on it.  There's a clear implication that they believe some of Trump's orders are illegal and should be disobeyed.  Great, let's have that conversation.  Stop aaalllmmmooosssttt getting there and stopping.  Which orders are illegal and why?  This should also be a top-down conversation starting that involves the President, Congress, the Supreme Court and senior military officials.  Trying to start some sort of bottom-up uprising among the military without providing any specifics is the wrong way to go about things.

Most modern presidents have given orders to the military that were deemed by legal experts to be illegal. Sometimes you get an investigation or some finger waving from Congress but usually nothing happens.

The people in the video were careful to not name or describe any "illegal orders" that have been given. At face value the video is correct, but in the current political context, its clearly trying to say there *has* been illegal orders, which is false. If Republicans had made such a video under Biden, democrats would be using the terms traitors and seditious behavior about the Republicans. 


This wont move the needle on Trump. The left will say its a serious concern, the right will be outraged that the left are seemingly telling the military to disobey orders (because they kind of are). This is another example of political divisiveness. 



And for those who will go "this isnt a both sides issue", yeah, it absolutely is. If anything, the democrats come off worse on this. Producing a video that clearly has an intent of implying illegal orders is extremely inflammatory. Theres no playing innocent here or shifting to "but Trump....".
